Breast
surgery is used for the correction of a variety of aesthetic and/or
medical conditions. A number of procedures and techniques exist to increase/decrease
the size of the breasts, correct breast asymmetries, reverse the effects
of aging, and reconstruct after other surgeries such as mastectomy.
Breast procedures present many options and issues such as implant type
and placement, location of the incisions, removal of excess skin and tissue,
positioning and size of the nipples, etc. The results can range from subtle
to dramatic, depending on the patient's specific needs and desires. The
specific procedure and the extent of reshaping are among the many issues
that your doctor will have to determine
in consultation with you.
The following is only a small sampling of the procedures available. For
a thorough evaluation of your situation, please contact us.
Breast Augmentation (Silicone & Saline available)
Breast enlargement increases the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. This procedure
is also used to help balance the size of the breasts for a more symmetrical appearance,
add fullness after a breast lift, correct volume loss after pregnancy, and recreate a breast
after mastectomy. A breast implant is usually composed of an outer silicone shell filled with
saline (salt water). Implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes to meet the individual woman’s
needs. This procedure will enlarge the breasts, but not correct basic defects in breast shape or form.
Additional procedures may be necessary to correct severe breast size or nipple position asymmetries.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Over the years, breasts can lose their shape and firmness due to a variety of factors
including pregnancy, nursing, loss of skin elasticity, gravity, and weight gain followed
by weight loss. Breast lift surgery can correct sagging breasts by raising and reshaping them.
Results can be long lasting, especially for women with smaller breasts. This procedure is often
combined with implants to increase breast firmness and size.
Breast Reduction
Large, disproportionate, and heavy breasts can cause a variety of problems ranging from insecurity
about one’s appearance to neck and back pain, shoulder grooving, skin irritation from bra straps,
skeletal problems, and breathing difficulties. Large breasts can make it harder to assess for lumps
or masses, thus making cancer detection much more difficult. Breast reduction surgery is used to reduce,
recontour, and reshape the breasts. Excess skin and breast tissue is removed, the nipple is repositioned
upward and reduced in size if necessary. Breast reduction may interfere with the ability to breastfeed in
the future, so women should weigh that factor into their decision.
